As a friend of Alicia’s older brother, and having several other mutual friends in common, Alicia and Jade had known each other for quite some time. However, it wasn’t until Jade had moved back home to Tasmania, after spending some time in New South Wales, that romance struck the pair. “We were both invited to go out with a bunch of friends one night and we hit it off immediately,” Alicia recounts.
On a weekend away, the couple were holidaying at Point Samson Resort on the Western Australian coastline. After spending the day exploring the seaside village, Jade suggested a late afternoon beach walk. “I was busy walking around the rocks at the beach when Jade took me up a sand track to a cliff top overlooking the water,” says Alicia. “After a few minutes Jade said, ‘I need to ask you a question’. I turned around and he was down on one knee, presenting a beautiful ring.”
“I actually didn’t even give him time to ask the question because I immediately screamed and jumped on him! After I calmed down he said ‘So what do you reckon?’ He was so nervous he said it was the first thing that popped into his mind. I just kept saying ‘yes’ over and over! We then went back to the resort and celebrated with a bottle of bubbles.”
The happy couple have been living in Port Hedland in Western Australia for three years but knew they wanted their big day in their home state of Tasmania. They chose the stunning Cascade Gardens in South Hobart, overlooking Mount Wellington, for both their nuptials and wedding reception. “We both wanted to get married in beautiful gardens and we also wanted somewhere quite central as we had guests coming from all over,” says Alicia.
As guests arrived at the reception, held in the Degraves room, which overlooks three acres of heritage gardens, they were treated to a performance by acoustic guitarist, Tony Mak, who also sang the couple’s wedding song, ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran.
Highlights and hitches
“For both of us, the main highlight was seeing each other for the first time that day,” says Alicia. “For Jade it was seeing me walking down the aisle towards him, and for me it was seeing Jade watching me with a smile on his face.”
“The speeches were also a huge highlight,” Alicia reveals. “There were four speeches in total and they brought lots of laughs, memories and a few tears!”
As for any hitches on the big day, “We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better one,” says Alicia. “Everything ran so smoothly and we didn’t have any problems arise.”
The newlyweds honeymooned in Europe, where they joined friends in Scotland who had also also recently tied the knot.
Advice for other couples
• Make sure you allocate some time the night before to try your dress on with your bridesmaids to see how long it takes so you’re not rushing the next day.
• Accept help from your bridal party, friends and family. Don’t underestimate how helpful they can be, this will take some of the stress off you.
• Take some time out a day or two before the wedding to pamper yourself, perhaps with a massage, and relax before the big day.
